We’re excited to introduce new Charopy smart recycling units across the Level 1 Food Court at Castle Towers!
These bins help ensure that bottles and cans are recycled properly by using scanning technology. Each unit stays locked until it recognises an eligible item, preventing contamination from general waste and greatly increasing the amount of material that can be successfully recycled.
Since the installation in September 2025, more than 40,000 bottles and cans have been collected through the Charopy units — items that might otherwise have ended up in landfill. That’s the equivalent of 250 supermarket trolleys full of containers!
What is a Charopy unit?
Charopy creates smart recycling panels that use simple scan-and-drop technology. When a customer scans a bottle or can, the bin flap unlocks and allows the item to be deposited. If the item isn’t eligible, the bin remains closed.
This smart system removes contamination from food scraps and general waste, helping us maintain a clean and reliable recycling stream.
Why food courts?
Food courts generate high volumes of recyclable drink containers, but they also face challenges with contamination from food and packaging. Traditional recycling signage often isn’t enough to change habits — so smart technology provides a practical solution.
Charopy units are already used in food courts across Australia, with some locations improving from almost 0% to nearly 100% effective recycling thanks to the elimination of contamination.
We’re proud to be taking this step toward a cleaner, more sustainable centre experience! Thank you for helping us make a positive environmental impact every time you recycle responsibly.
